Morris Canal
Canoeist on the Morris Canal - Towaco
This is the same photo in the Colrick book on p. 49 that identifies the gazebo as being on the Brendler property in Towaco. This location has to be west of Towaco center where the railroad closely parallels the canal.

The photographer took this view from a location slightly east of the spot where the erroneously captioned “Canoeists on the Morris Canal – Montville” picture was taken. Behind a bush in the upper, center-right background, part of the frame of the Brendler’s gazebo is visible. Given the printing on them, this picture and the preceding one apparently appeared on postcards, and since both have the same style of lettering to identify the scenes, they were probably taken by the same photographer in sequence on the same day.

Canal West of Cooks Bridge
Morris Canal - Towaco - Circa Late 1800s
This scene looks west, and shows a stretch of the canal that lies behind the Towaco firehouse. The elevated position from which the photograph was taken indicates that the photographer was standing on the bridge that crossed the canal behind the Whitehall Methodist Church. A canal boat basin can be just made out in the photo’s upper right.

"This scene looks northeast across the canal in Towaco. The Lackawanna Railroad is out of sight behind the canal, but its presence is indicated by the telegraph lines and by the semaphore signal at the extreme right. I suspect that the semaphore is the same one that appears in three of the railroad photos, so the location of the photographer would be east of Towaco center near the Brendler property."
